Heartfelt thanks to Ronald Thwaites
THE EDITOR, Sir:
Normally, kindness, compassion and sincerity are not descriptors associated with the typical politician, but I, like many other parents, met one in the form of the best minister of education this country has ever had - Ronald Thwaites.
My child went through university because of him. Like many other parents, we tell our children, "Beat the books" and that "only education can get you out of poverty".
Well, Minister Thwaites said one evening, when the University of the West Indies threatened to send them out of their programmes, "These are our children, needing to reach their goals; we must help them." And so he did - all 20 of them.
We said our thanks then, but with a new minister in place, Ruel Reid, he needs to know that the shoes he has to fill are not small. Mr Reid must do his best for the children of Jamaica and not only his own.
God bless you, Mr Thwaites. We parents whose children benefited by your being minister commend and thank you.
