Learn words before performing anthem

On Saturday, May 7, 2016, at the Jamaica International Invitational meet, our national anthem was sung as part of the official opening ceremony. I was amazed to hear the soloist sing, "Guide us with thy mighty hand ..." and ... "To our leaders, great defenders ...".

The correct words are: "Guard us with thy mighty hand.." and .... "To our leaders, Great Defender ...".

Anyone privileged to sing our national anthem on any public occasion should learn the words and prepare to perform in a professional manner. I hope the relevant persons had a word with this performer. Our symbols cannot be disrespected in this way, especially when the world is watching.

I am grateful to Yvonne Coke for constantly reminding us to respect our national symbols. While we look forward to Rio 2016 and fervently hope that our beloved Jamaica will feature prominently, let us hope that the Jamaican flag will be true to its colours - black green and GOLD (not yellow).
