Put other crops on cane lands

Published:Saturday | May 14, 2016 | 5:00 AM

THE EDITOR, Sir:

Sugar estates are good agricultural lands. When the acreage under sugar cane is significantly reduced pursuant to management evaluation, as in a major case now happening, cannot even part of the acreage released be put into production of the guaranteed market crops of ginger, onion, red peas, and cassava?

In the interest of the Jamaican economy by import substitution, export earnings and jobs, I urge the Government and the sugar industry to examine the feasibility of this suggestion.
