Overhaul vehicle inspections in safety push

Published:Monday | May 30, 2016 | 5:07 PMOwen S. Crosbie

THE EDITOR, Sir:

To drastically reduce traffic accidents involving public passenger vehicles, I make the following recommendations:

1. Implement policy to drastically reduce corruption at motor vehicle examination depots.

2. Drivers of public passenger vehicles are professional drivers and so the issuance of their licences should be by a professional body. Motor vehicle inspectors should no longer issue licences to them, but only make recommendations to that body, which should be the only authority to issue licences, and, like the courts, to suspend or revoke. In this context, licenses should be issued on an annual basis and only to those that the body is satisfied as suitable, factoring, in particular, previous convictions either by that body or the courts; temperaments; and the like.
