Flogging would cut crime 50%

THE EDITOR, Sir:

Each time I watch the news or read the newspaper of another person being shot in Jamaica, it makes me have to agree that we reap what we sow.

Gun crimes are increasing every day. The gunmen are getting younger and younger, as if it's a toy. If those who have taken away the powers of parents and the teachers from flogging children did not have their backsides flogged, they would never have turned out to be what they are today.

Every person caught with an unlicensed firearm should be flogged, even if he or she is not sent to prison. We can't keep building bigger and bigger prisons.

I believe flogging would reduce the crime rate in Jamaica by at least 50 per cent. I know there are those who will say it's cruel, it is inhuman, or that it is old-fashioned, but do they have a better solution? If so, let's hear it or shut up.

The Government should give back the power to the parents in the homes and teachers in the schools to discipline youngsters in their care. Far fewer people would be killed by the cane, the whip or the strap than at present being killed by the gun.
