Clamp down on bike thieves

Published:Tuesday | June 7, 2016 | 6:00 AM

THE EDITOR, Sir:

It is unsettling that unsuspecting, hardworking citizens of this country are being plagued by thieves who are utilising what we've come to describe as 'messenger bikes' to fast-track their getaway plans, after carrying out traumatic muggings and purse snatchings in our parking lots, alleyways, and on our sidewalks.

These acts of theft have been prevalent for quite some time, and I am absolutely disappointed that the relevant authorities have not done enough to enforce a relentless clampdown on the audacious culprits.

We cannot allow criminality to evoke fear and compromise safety. So, for starters, expeditious installation of closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras should take flight in areas that regrettably offer optimal conditions for strong-arm robberies to occur. The police should hold a firm grip on said areas through foot patrols and unannounced spot checks.

Vitally, in addition to the aforementioned security measures, an imparting of suspicion literacy and basic self-defence techniques, whether psychological and/or physical, must be taught.

I implore all functionaries to let the time of action be now and not a second later!
