If Christians could be human
THE EDITOR, Sir:
The United States Embassy responded to the Orlando gay club tragedy by flying a rainbow flag at half mast in solidarity with the victims. It was a heartfelt show of sympathy and compassion, which we should all embrace.
Not so the Christian lobbies. As expected, they proclaimed that "flying the rainbow flag is provocative and insensitive, and in support of a gay agenda". Likewise, a similar sentiment is expressed by our attorney general, Marlene Malahoo Forte. She tweeted that the embassy's action was "disrespectful of our laws".
You would think that the Christian lobbies would, despite their faith, embrace their humanity as mature sentient beings: feel the hurt and sorrows of the victims and their families. It's called empathy.
Mrs Malahoo Forte's response is hardly surprising. A country where one prime minister commented that gays were not welcome in his Cabinet, and the indifference of the previous government to the gay question, our politicians will always slavishly and hypocritically dance to the music of the people.
