Taxi shoot-up scandalous

Published:Monday | July 4, 2016 | 7:00 AM

THE EDITOR, Sir:

The shooting, allegedly by the police, of a 15-year-old schoolgirl of the Convent of Mercy Academy (Alpha) in Kingston last week sent shock waves across the country. The entire shooting incident is scandalous, grossly unfortunate and despicable in every respect. The victim and her family deserve justice and nothing less.

Time and again we hear of irresponsible, reckless and callous policemen firing shots at moving vehicles. These police shootings must be immediately cauterised. Too many Jamaicans have been killed or maimed in these circumstances. The cavalier attitude to the constabulary's use-of-force policy is a massive negative indictment on the police and the commissioner.

I do hope that the alleged police officers involved in this dastardly act will be brought to justice forthwith and face the full force of the law and courts. We sincerely pray and hope that the student who was shot makes a full medical recovery.
