Give us ZIKV prevention kits
THE EDITOR, Sir:
The Zika spreading mosquito is yet to invade the island on a wide scale, but the government should not be taking any chances less it be caught off guard. "Keeping it clean for health sake !" and the distribution of container covers are insufficient.
Dr Christopher Tufton must go a step further by distributing free health kits. It is the best way to prevent the rapid spread of the disease. In early May 2016, there were 500 cases reported in the United States, but they contracted the disease overseas, or had sex with people who did.
The ZIKV prevention kits should include insect repellent, condoms and mosquito dunk devises that kill mosquito eggs in stagnant water.
Zika has been linked to a range of birth defects, including a condition that causes babies to be born with unusually small heads and severe brain damage. The World Health Organization (WHO) declared Zika a global emergency in February 2016, as the virus was spreading rapidly through the Americas.
The availability of the 'kit' must be seen as a worthwhile investment.
