Activism and community safety

Published:Thursday | July 21, 2016 | 12:00 AM

THE EDITOR, Sir:

The issue of housebreaking and violent crimes will only be seriously addressed when residents declare enough is enough. They must be on the lookout for each other, recognising legitimate and illegitimate strangers, and be on the ready to act, if necessary, with the help of the police who should be on call.

Criminals strive in communities, on streets where there is little communication and active segregation, streets where nobody cares much about each other. Let?s look out for each other and ensure that in the days and at nights someone is looking out and listening and is prepared to act.

Safety is our individual yet collective responsibility. Yes, I believe we can do it; together we can.

If Donald Trump can get support, then the good people in communities can also gain the support of other good people as we ensure crime prevention is at its utmost.

Until activism on community safety is embraced, we all will suffer the fate of crime and criminality.

Active and effective neighbourhood watch is what is urgently required.
