UWI is scandalous

The University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona, should be ashamed of itself. I am was in shock after reading the front-page story of The Gleaner on Tuesday, July 19, 2016. It is upsetting to have learnt that Prime Minister Andrew Holness' name has not been engraved in the honour park despite being prime minister on two separate occasions. What signal is the UWI really sending?

While my personal view that the university deliberately left out the name of Prime Minister Holness, there needs to be some professionalism at UWI.

If the institution wants to be credible, appear non-partisan, and be above the fray, certain things it must get on top of. I have always had the gut feeling that the university does not respect Jamaica Labour Party leaders.

The UWI must be careful because public perception is a hell of a thing. The university has not been forthcoming with this sort of admission, so we are forced to draw our own conclusions about this really messy episode.

It certainly would not be honourable for the UWI to hurry a ceremony now, because there was no genuine intention in the first place to have it, but it is a shame and disgrace.
