Rett syndrome no laughing matter

Published:Tuesday | August 2, 2016 | 8:00 AM

THE EDITOR, Sir:

As the mother of a 35-year-old girl with Rett syndrome, I find Gordon Robinson's use of the disease in his column ('No microwave fixes for crime', Sunday Gleaner, July 31, 2016) naÔve, insulting, and in poor taste.

Does he know anything about Rett syndrome? The hand-wringing associated with Rett syndrome is caused by the loss of hand use. It's nothing to be proud of. We have to try to find ways of controlling the hand-wringing because of the damage it can cause to the skin and bones.

Mr Robinson obviously didn't do his homework. Rett syndrome is a devastating disease and a fight every day. See the website http://www.rettsyndrome.org.
