Portia off mark with ill-timed tweet

THE EDITOR, Sir:

While most of us were busy cheering on our athletes in Rio, the opposition leader had other ideas. It seems Portia Simpson Miller could not wait for Elaine Thompson to cross the line for her to start the politics again tweeting: "I am calling on the Prime Minister to honour his commitment to increase the minimum wage #NWManchester #withthepeople #forthepeople."

Her tweet was posted just after the 100m women's final, and she didn't think that maybe instead of politicking on a night that our athletes were being praised by the world, it would have been better to focus on what was good with Jamaica - the talent of our young people.

It would have been better for the former PM to honour the efforts of our women and men in Rio by praising their collective efforts rather than trying to score cheap political points.

There is a time and place for everything, and on this occasion, Sista P was clearly off the mark!
