Tap into aquatic sport talent

Published:Saturday | August 20, 2016 | 8:00 AM

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I am totally in agreement with Orville Higgins' piece ('Sprinting prowess not enough') in The Gleaner dated August 19, 2016.

Another aspect of athletics that I think can grow is aquatic sports. Have you ever seen an accident close to a body of water? Do these people who live close by wait for the authorities to come by and retrieve victims from their perish?

Take a visit to Caymanas Bay in St Catherine. See those little children playing in the water daily? What about some programme for them to get proper training and coaching to represent their country? Should we rely squarely on the shoulders of Alia Atkinson and the few others to make a mark?

Seriously, more attention should be place on other genres of sport. What shall we look to when we no longer produce sprinters? Will Jamaica just fall off the map of international sports?
