Learn from Rio heroics

Published:Wednesday | August 24, 2016 | 8:00 AM

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I am a regular reader of Ian Boyne's In Focus columns on Sundays. I must say well done and congratulations to our athletes who have made us proud in their performance at Rio.

Well done to Mr Boyne for yet another inspiring and well-penned article ('Master-class lessons in Rio', August 21, 2016). You have been a role model to me for such a long time and I am deeply touched.

Too often, we stay at a distance and see the success of others, not knowing what they went through to achieve what they have. Sometimes, instead of taking notes and rejoicing with the achievers, we judge, sometimes wrongfully, and miss out on the opportunity to truly celebrate in their victories.

We need to draw some important lessons from Rio. While we commend the sterling performance of our athletes, we must understand that it took much discipline and hard work to pull off what they did. To accomplish any dream or goal, it takes unwavering discipline, dedication and firm faith.

I have heard it said many times that 'if you want good, yuh nose affi run', and it is so true. We all must learn to endure hardships and any obstacle(s) that may try to prevent us from pursuing our dreams. Again, heartiest congratulations to our athletes.
