End JUTC preference

Published:Saturday | September 3, 2016 | 9:14 AM

THE EDITOR, Sir:

The Transport Operators Development Sustainable Services (TODSS) is calling on the Ministry of Transport and Works to relax the decision that gives preferential rights to the Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) buses to use a section of Mandela Highway during specific periods. This is even more urgent, in light of the proposed plans to construct two additional lanes on the highway, as well as other improvement works.

With the construction work (which could last longer than two months) expected to commence this weekend, the present rights enjoyed by the JUTC, if continued, would cause serious delays for motorists.

While we understand that the government has no interest in whether private transport operators lose or gain,we submit that the non-reversal of this regulation would constitute a serious breach of our Constitutional right to freedom of movement.
We urge the appropriate ministers to consider relaxing the regulations immediately.
