Respect the fruit vendors

Published:Thursday | September 29, 2016 | 12:00 AM

I wish to make a plea for persons who make a living from selling fruits to passing motorists seasonally. One can always recognise what season is 'in' by these vendors (right now, it is guinep). I marvel at their enterprise, because their profit must be marginal, depending on the season, yet their sales will determine if the household eats that night, or not.

I can imagine how they have to prepare to catch a passing motorist's eye and then stretch the proceeds to put a meal on the table. No matter how small their profit margin is, invariably, a day's sale will provide the night's meal. All this, while the vendors face the blazing heat of the sun or the pouring rain.

My plea, therefore, is to all motorists - recognise the factors that have forced them to choose an honest, hard-working path, instead of any other. Your support may make the difference between a child or children going to bed hungry, or not.
