Beware of IMF nudge on property tax

Published:Monday | October 3, 2016 | 10:00 AM

THE EDITOR, Sir:

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) is making recommendations to recalibrate Jamaica's property tax system. I suggest 'recalibrate' is a fancy word for raising property taxes.

Does anyone know if the IMF has coordinated the recalibrating of property taxes in any other countries? A search of Google with these keywords did not readily reveal any precedents.

People of Jamaica, examine these events clearly. Land ownership is critical to real and lasting economic deliverance.

I read where Mr Matalon has called our property tax compliance a national disgrace. I live in the United States, and recently purchased a 3.5-acre parcel at auction; the owner failed to pay his property taxes.

Now, if this is an attempt to genuinely help Jamaicans and not a bid to take land from the people, I apologise for the tone of this letter.
