Falconer playing politics

Published:Thursday | October 6, 2016 | 10:00 AM

THE EDITOR, Sir:

On Saturday night, when most of the country was awaiting information and updates from the Government relating to the status of Hurricane Matthew, former information minister Sandrea Falconer found time to ludicrously question the outfit of Prime Minister Andrew Holness while he was on tour in sections of the country. Frankly speaking, as a former information minister, should Falconer not ensure that what she is questioning and suggesting has true factual merit? It seems not. Well, the green hat that Falconer had a problem with turned out to be one that had 'Jamaica' written on it, complemented by an embroidery of the country's flag, and was not a JLP hat.

It is absolutely scandalous and disgraceful that Falconer sought to play politics during a period when Jamaica was preparing and expecting a Category Four hurricane, seeking to divide the country along partisan lines. Furthermore, PM Holness was not at all wearing any Jamaica Labour Party hat, and Falconer's careless and irresponsible comments demonstrate that she is a tribalised People's National Party politician whose time has passed, and she should do the decent thing and apologise to the prime minister and resign as a PNP member. She has been a failure as information minister and as a government senator in the last PNP government, and now is an enormous liability to the party and Simpson Miller.

Congratulations to Prime Minister Holness, Local Government Minister Desmond McKenzie and the entire Cabinet for preparing the county exceedingly well during the period when the country expected the hurricane, and for putting into place the necessary infrastructure to facilitate persons who were staying in public shelters.
