Illicit cane fires are destroying the sugar industry slowly and surely. The sugar industry is Jamaica's largest agri-business and the backbone of employment for some 40,000 people who depend on the industry for their survival. This includes all the wives and children of sugar workers.

I am calling on all of the citizens of the various communities to protect the industry from illicit cane fires. Should this sector be shut down, residential and commercial hubs would be turned into a ghost town and there would be total 'sufferation'.

The sugar industry has been divested, and we want to thank our investors for carrying out their expansion programme. We are calling on all stakeholders to give their support.
