45% pass rate is substandard

THE EDITOR, Sir:

With regard to Orville Higgins' column 'That 45% rule' (November 11, 2016), by no measure should 45 per cent be an acceptable standard for student athletes. I don't know if Orville Higgins is being sarcastic or serious.

Surely, he can't be suggesting that getting 45 per cent, which is a failing grade, is too hard. Surely, he can't be suggesting that the standard be lowered to facilitate sports. The one thing he wrote that I agreed with is that all students should be held to the same standard, preferably a higher standard.

Is it any wonder our children are failing when we don't even have the confidence in them to expect greater things from them? Aren't we in effect saying, 'I know you can't do better, so don't even try.'

Shame on you. Shame on ISSA. Shame on us for being the country that says to our children, 'You CAN'T do it.'
