Save our girls
THE EDITOR, Sir:
The situations in which our Jamaican girls find themselves, on many occasions, leave me to wonder how we have failed them.
One night, I was informed of an abusive situation in which a young girl I know had found herself. Desperately trying to get advice on how to help this young woman, I tried to reach the Women's Crisis Centre on its 24-hour hotline. What I heard was not a comforting message that provided help or information on further assistance, but simply a voice message that noted that I had reached the crisis centre - and so ended the message.
What could have happened in the time it takes us to respond to these situations? How many more of our girls must be found dumped and rotting in bushes like stray animals?
Let's reach out to these girls and women who will one day have families of their own, if they survive.
