Letter of the Day | All Jamaicans have a role in reducing crime
THE EDITOR, Sir:
The Jamaica Chamber of Commerce (JCC) wishes to thank outgoing Commissioner of Police, Dr. Carl Williams for his 33 years of service to the Jamaica Constabulary and the citizens of Jamaica.
While we expect that the Police Services Commission will move expeditiously to ensure that this critical post will be filled as soon as possible, we pledge to support his interim and duly appointed successor(s).
However, it is important to once again stress that while the Jamaica Constabulary plays the lead role in the efforts to reduce crime and to maintain law and order, there is no less an important role for all Jamaicans to play in achieving these ends. Without support from and collaboration by the citizenry in our personal and business lives, any efforts towards the achievement of a peaceful and safe Jamaica will be thwarted.
At the level of the individual and at the level of the wider society, there can be no resiling from this urgent imperative.
It is our hope that as we enter the holiday season and look forward to a new year, Jamaicans from all walks of life will take the occasion to contemplate just how we can take an additional step - whether tangibly or tacitly - towards making a difference in realizing our vision of a peaceful and safe nation.
