Letter of the Day | A 2017 reality check

Published:Wednesday | January 4, 2017 | 1:00 AM

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I find it extremely silly that people actually believe that the mere movement of the hands of a clock to midnight can somehow, on its own, usher in a new way of life, including an end to murders.

You hear people talking about, "Oh, good riddance to the year 2016 and all its accompanying problems" without recognising that 2017 will only bring a continuation of 2016's problems left unaddressed. It is the bitter truth.

Even though this is a new year, we will only reap the seeds we planted last year. If we planted bad seeds, that shall we reap in 2017. Celebrations will not change that, no matter how extravagant. Superstition will not change it. Magic will not change it. The movement of the hands of a clock does not grow an economy. The movement of the hands of a clock does not bring justice to those to whom it has been denied. The movement of time does not eradicate poverty. It does not end the pain felt by family members of the several hundreds killed in this country every year. Time does not bring change naturally. Insight is what creates change.

Change will only come when we decide that instead of believing in fairy tales, we face reality and rebuild this great country. There is no other way.
