Letter of the Day | Church chock-full of paedophiles
THE EDITOR, Sir:
The Christian Brethren Assemblies of Jamaica (CBAJ) is one of 10 religious groups admitted as interested parties to oppose my constitutional challenge to the Jamaican anti-sodomy law. One of the reasons these groups support this British colonially imposed law is because, they claim, gays (that is, all gays) are paedophiles, and legalising consensual adult same-gender intimacy will pose a threat to children.
Yet, now that some clergy, including the head of a prominent denomination, are caught up in a sex scandal, the CBAJ has the unmitigated gall to write: "We gently remind the nation that the supposed actions of a few do not represent the body as a whole ... ."
What the CBAJ has not acknowledged is that clerical sexual abuse of children is most decidedly not "the supposed actions of a few." This has been going on for decades.
It is high time that the Jamaican Church stopped prying into the bedrooms of consenting adults.
