Sally, we salute you
THE EDITOR, Sir:
Sally Yates, the sacked US acting attorney general, has set an excellent example for us attorneys. How many of us, for all the fees in the world and the prestigious position, are prepared to tell our client (president or prime minister), "It's wrong. I cannot do it."?
Our opinions cannot be client driven; they must be law driven. For what does it profit a lawyer to gain his client's approval and abandon his commitment to his oath to uphold the law and the Constitution?
Sally has lost her job, but she has gained the respect of all right-thinking persons. History will absolve her for not allowing trumped-up executive orders to compromise her commitment to do the right thing.
Sally, we salute you!
