Methodists recommit to caring for kids
THE EDITOR, Sir:
Over the past several years, the Methodist Church in Jamaica has had as it central focus and theme the nurturing of children in the context of a supportive family environment. In this regard, we have launched initiatives in all our congregations targeting especially vulnerable children and providing them with Christian care.
We are, therefore, deeply concerned about recent allegations of sexual abuse of children by members of the Christian ministerial fraternity and recommit to working towards eradicating all forms of abuse of our children.
FOLLOWING CHRIST'S ORDERS
We reaffirm our own commitment to our principles of holy living, sexual purity, marital fidelity and responsible parenting. "But Jesus said, 'Let the little children come to me, and do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of heaven belongs'." (Matthew 19:14). Adults have a special responsibility to guide, guard and protect all children in obedience to Christ's command.
Our prayers are with those affected at this time, whom we commit to God's healing power and grace.
