Easing the plight of our seniors
THE EDITOR, Sir:
This is an open letter to the minister of labour and social services.
I am making a plea on behalf of the pensioners of this county.
While there has been increases in the minimum wage (however small) in the past few years, I am hard pressed to recall when last there has been an upward adjustment in the benefit to pensioners.
Given the cost of living standard which obtains today, the average person cannot exist on as little as $2,000 per fortnight.
The minimum payable to these seniors should be at least $3,500-$4,000 fortnightly.
While being acutely aware of the constraints the Government is operating in, perhaps a bonus when each book is renewed may be more feasible.
Either way, something needs to be done to ease the plight of our seniors.
