Ban Kartel from music awards
THE EDITOR, Sir:
Entertainment news reports that Vybz Kartel, convicted murderer currently serving a life sentence, was the biggest winner at the 10th annual Youth View Awards, held recently at the National Indoor Sports Centre.
Kartel copped five awards from eight nominations, each one met with 'thunderous applause'. I found this achievement quite sad, and a contradiction. Worse this was a youth award.
Only in Jamaica do we get away with things like this, and then we wonder why we can't control crime. I believe in second chances, but an incarcerated murder convict ought to be eliminated from consideration or nomination at any award show. What message are the organisers sending?
Commit the crime, do the time, you've broken the social contract, and despite the talent, you've waived your rights to be adored and acknowledged. You do not deserve any form of public adulation.
