Proper road markings crucial

Jermaine Young

This is an open letter to the National Works Agency (NWA).

I ask the Jamaican Government and the responsible road agency to please mark the roads.

Although reckless driving is a major factor in a number of traffic accidents, the Government and the NWA have to take some responsibility for the poor state of our roads. The lack of a dividing white line on most A- and B-class roads is atrocious and makes driving difficult.

Even in the much-talked-about Corporate Area, major thoroughfares such as lower Hagley Park Road and Mona Road lack this basic feature. I would really like to see the associated cost with carrying out this simple yet important task of road maintenance. Even the small island of Nevis has most of its roads properly marked.

I believe that our politicians are not serious about change and doing the simple, yet right things to improve the aesthetics of our infrastructure. The recent ranking by Mercer shows that Kingston needs major urban changes for it to be considered a liveable city.

A luta continua.
