Property taxes wicked, oppressive!
THE EDITOR, Sir:
The new tax regime that the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) Government has imposed to fulfil what clearly was an ill-conceived election promise to get the party back into power is causing pain to many. Property taxes, some of which have been increased by more than 1,000 per cent, is threatening to force people to give up their homes.
Without a doubt, the promise to raise the income tax-free threshold to $1.5 million was the primary reason why the JLP won the February 2016 general election. Now that the JLP is in power, it is finding itself backed into a corner by imposing oppressive taxes to make good on that election gimmick.
The Holness administration is truly heartless. A lot of the people who will be asked to pay these new oppressive taxes are pensioners who have worked hard, all of their lives, for a good house in a good neighbourhood. Others are struggling farmers who are just barely making ends meet. Many of these property owners were not benefiting from the increased tax-free threshold. Now these people will have to be unwilling sacrificial lambs in this great transfer of wealth from the poor to the not-too-poor.
