Property tax rollback for poor, too?
THE EDITOR, Sir:
Peter Phillips, the new leader of opposition, has demanded that the Government roll back the new property tax regime. Listening to his statements, one gets the impression that all is gloom and doom.
I have spoken to several ordinary Jamaicans who are tax compliant and many admitted that their property taxes have been reduced by more than 40 per cent. My question to the opposition leader is this: Does his tax rollback demand also mean that the more than 270,000 Jamaicans who have received lower, or no higher, property tax assessments, should not obtain this benefit?
The challenges with our parliamentary system is that a few people make rules for all of us while they themselves are exempted from them.
I am challenging the tax authorities to publish the names of all members of parliament who are not tax compliant and the amounts they owe Jamaica. I would not be surprised if more than 90 per cent of our politicians are not tax compliant.
