Letter of the Day | Sexual abusers of kids are heartless pervs

Published:Wednesday | April 19, 2017 | 4:11 AM

THE EDITOR, Sir:

INSANE! That is the word that comes to my mind when I think of the sexual abuse of children. The secular madness feeds on our nation like a plague and, like any other, needs to end!

Living in a country where each child is a unique bundle of joy and potential, I find it absolutely heartless to gobble up such precious abilities and willpower. This is the job of these assaulters -to consume and destroy the worth of today's youth. Indecencies such as fondling, grooming, probing, 'touching' and the literal and terrifying act of rape of children should stop.

As should be known by all, sexual abuse of children is when a child is used by an adult or older adolescent for any sort of sexual stimulation. Examples of this include rape, sexual touching, sexual grooming, allowing or encouraging a child to watch or listen to sex acts, or pornography, and indecent exposure.

The age of consent in Jamaica is 16, and anyone under the age of 18 is considered legally as a child. Therefore, engaging in sexual acts (with or without consent) with someone under the age of 16 is both immoral and illegal.

Harsher penalties

So, how do I feel about these assaulters, perpetrators and perverts? I feel they should be sought out and given the harshest penalties there are! No child deserves to be treated this way, as it breaks them down mentally, physically and emotionally in the most horrifying ways.

Also, enough cannot be said about our communities, friends and even families that hide the stories behind closed doors, prolonging the pain and deteriorating the minds and bodies of our innocent children.

I believe that, as a nation, it is our right to speak out for those who cannot take the stand against this epidemic and work out plausible and substantial solutions for the issue of child sexual abuse.
