Stand up for your rights!
THE EDITOR, Sir:
Isn't it clear that the tax package revealed by the current Government will lead to destabilisation in the country? The tax package is unbalanced and the result could be economic slavery for many and a divided country. Not to mention the loss of homes owned by the aged and low-income earners due to the onerous hike in the land tax.
While one can cut electricity and food costs, how will persons be able to afford shelter? How will the increased taxes affect crime? Governments in the past have lost millions of dollars through failed projects, cost overruns, etc, but yet Jamaicans are penalised with heavier taxation. The ultimate insult is that taxes are used by political parties to run their campaigns.
Would government ministers give up some of their hefty perks? In Jamaican parlance, this type of governance doesn't 'spell sense'. It is entirely impractical, insane, and unfair.
Jamaica, the only music that should be played on our radios, boom boxes, and electronic devices now is 'Get up, stand up, stand up for your rights!'
