No to relocation of dump site to Danvers Pen

THE EDITOR, Sir:

It is rumoured that there will be a removal of the Church Corner garbage disposal site in Morant Bay to a possible site in Danvers Pen, and I dare say 'rumour' because no representative from the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) has met with the community members to share this absurd plan. I am wondering what could have even triggered the NSWMA to want to relocate the dump site to Danvers Pen of all the places in St Thomas.

It would be nice if the government agencies relocated some form of development and economic opportunities in Danvers Pen rather than a dump. It is also rather surprising how quiet our political advocates/representatives are on this matter. I wager it's because it is not yet election year.

Of course, the NSWMA will make it seem as though what they would be doing would be pretty harmless, and they would probably even tell the public that the site will be well taken care of; however, just take a look at most of the dumps around the country and how unkempt they are. In whatever ways they sell this initiative, we are not buying it.

We urge the NWSMA to keep searching for somewhere else to put that dump because the community members of Danvers Pen will not tolerate it here. We do not want it here!

Put the dump far away from where tax-paying, law-abiding citizens are living!
