How about a gun amnesty?

THE EDITOR, Sir:

One way to eliminate illegal possession of weapons and drastically reduce crime, particularly murders, is to spearhead a gun amnesty.

Pay big money to anyone who informs the police where to find illegal guns. I'm talking $100,000 per gun that is turned over or for information received leading to a gun find.

Make it mandatory for persons found with illegal guns to be refused bail and a mandatory sentence of about 15 years.

Pay money quickly with no questions asked. Once persons realise that they are being paid quickly, others will follow suit. Many persons in depressed communities can't find food daily.

If they are given real money for becoming informants, they will do it. Just don't shout where you got the information from in the media.

Finally, address the long-time span for completing a case from arrest to sentencing. When a gunman or gunwoman is found with an illegal weapon, he or she should know that in a month's time they are going to prison for a full 15 years just because they had an illegal gun.

It can be done. Get companies to help fund this project because they will greatly benefit from the reduction in crimes.
