Sista P loyal fighter to the end

It's been attributed to several persons, but whoever coined the mantra 'get up, dress up, show up', must have been thinking about our former prime minister and the former member of parliament for St Andrew South Western, Portia Simpson Miller.

Many people don't know this, but the single hardest part of public service is dedication: the act of getting up every single day, of getting out in front of the people, putting personal concerns aside, because there is work to be done and people who depend on you.

It sounds easy: get up, dress up and show up. But consider that while there is no doubt about how much she is loved by the Jamaican people, the minority who have criticised her have been brutal in their unkindness.

Yet, even in the face of the hostile cartoons, the jeers and the putdowns, the member from South West St Andrew faced all negativity with dignity and grace: she would get up, dress up and show up.

But while I could go on further, others will say more, so I'd just like to add the most important part of the member from South West St Andrew's legacy of dedication to public service: she would never give up.

Sick or healthy, good mood or bad, rain or shine, the former prime minister never gave up fighting for poor people, she never gave up the principles of our party, and she never gave up on the Jamaican people. Dedication, Mr Speaker, is when you get up, dress up, show up, and never give up.

Sista P, we thank you, for your dedication, for never giving up the fight for justice, for never running from hard work, and for your lifetime of service to Jamaica.

We salute you.
