Key strategies to fight crime

THE EDITOR, Sir:

Here are a few suggestions to curb the bloodletting in Jamaica.

1. Government must enforce a temporary disbandment of the Firearm Licensing Authority and all firearms already certified/issued recalled while that entire operation is revamped.

2. In tandem with the proposed special zones of operations, random vehicle searches on our roadways must include inspection of bonnets, undercarriages, and inner compartments of vehicle doors, as well as under vehicle seats

3. Since Customs has suddenly discovered that contraband of all types is a common occurrence in false compartments of just about every package, every container, every suitcase, every vehicle, disassembled or otherwise, that comes to the ports, should be meticulously searched. Let's ask National integrity Action to recruit volunteers who can be engaged in detailed inspections. It will be time-consuming, but well worth it.

4. Government must carefully screen and recruit five times the current levels of both staffing and coastguard patrol vessels so that we may have increased prospects of nabbing those responsible for the guns-for-drugs trade and the like.
