Slowpoke Boycott most immemorable
THE EDITOR, Sir:
The unprovoked comments made by Geoffrey Boycott about some of our West Indian legends are unfortunate, and he should be dropped from the current series between the WI and England as a panellist for BBC.
Boycott did not do as much as what greats like Garfield Sobers did for cricket. He is, in fact, one of the slowest scorers in Test cricket ever. People like Mr Boycott were one of the reasons why cricket is thought to be a boring sport.
Cricket did not miss Mr Boycott because he was not the epitome of good cricket and was a snail-like scorer who did dismally against the West Indies with their firepower at such time.
In another 20 or so years, he won't be remembered at all because he was not revered by his own nation for his ultimate contribution to the game of cricket. His entire Test career was not even as good as Vivian Richards' county career. He could not fit into the shadow of the illustrious careers of these great men. Because Boycott was begging for sympathy, they should knight him to satisfy a miserable soul. Maybe he will get well-deserved rest from the nightmarish days of the 1970s until now.
