Petition success with OPM very difficult
THE EDITOR, Sir:
This is an open letter to the Office of the Prime Minister.
The United States of America's population is 323 million, while Jamaica's is 2.8 million. For the president of the US to sign a petition, it has to garner 100,000 signatures in 30 days, while in Jamaica, it has to garner 15,000 signatures in 40 days.
The White House wants one citizen out of 3,230 citizens to sign its petition. The calculation reads 323,000,000 divided by 100,000. The Office of the Prime Minister wants one citizen out of 187 citizens to sign. That's 2,800,000 divided by 15,000.
For a petition to be successful to the White House, it needs more than 3,333 signatures a day. Our Office of the Prime Minister needs 375 a day.
The success rate for a petition to reach the prime minister's desk is nearly impossible. We have to admit that Jamaicans, overall, ain't into advocacy. All we do is talk, but no action. Also, why would someone write a petition that doesn't have a chance?
