Princess Margaret needs emergency attention

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I write to you out of sheer frustration as it relates to the waiting time at the Princess Margaret Hospital. The fact that I attended the hospital in the first instance underscores the urgent need I had for medical attention because I had promised myself never to return there after a horrible experience I had a few years ago.

It was during the rainy season, and I had flu-like symptoms that made me nauseous and suffer an unbearable headache. The nurse on duty told me that I had to go home as they were only dealing with emergencies there.

 

NO REMORSE

 

Of course, I believed the way I was feeling was an emergency, so I waited around and spoke to a doctor, who asked me without remorse if the nurse hadn't told me that I would not be attended to. The end result of that was a chest infection, which the 'private' doctor said was a notch away from pneumonia and two weeks out of the professional environment.

I must say, things have changed as the customer service has improved a little, as well as the infrastructure. But it is perhaps the air conditioner and comfortable working environment that makes these health-care professionals so relaxed as the waiting time in order to be attended to left me crippled in pain.

I cannot fathom how they can claim that they are dealing with emergencies, but people have to wait for hours to be attended to. What do they regard as an emergency?

I am calling on the administration to look into the situation, assess the social impact of this kind of negligence, and address the issue in a timely fashion.
