Reparations fight a just cause

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I read your report on the speech of Professor Anthony Chen with mixed emotions. I agreed with everything he said about holding developed countries to account for their responsibility for climate change.

But why did he have to add "instead of seeking reparations for slavery"? It is not an either/or issue.

Reparation is about obtaining justice for the damage caused by a deliberate and exploitative crime against humanity. It is a just cause that I have supported for years.

Action on climate change is about obtaining justice for the damage caused by the deliberate and exploitative emission of greenhouse gases and pollutants into our atmosphere. It is also a just cause.

Both campaigns are about making the exploiters take responsibility for the harm they have done by enriching themselves at the expense of our people.

Both involve reconciliation and partnership, so that in future, all of us can move forward in a spirit of total respect for all the diverse peoples and environments in our beautiful world.
