Slain cop was sweet, brave
THE EDITOR, Sir:
The killing of Corporal Melvin Smith last Friday night in Mandeville, when he was trying to apprehend robbers, has left the town in a complete shock. The callousness with which the killers executed him will not be forgotten.
I appeal to all those who saw or who know who these men to tell the police. We cannot want things to be better if we allow killers to get away with murder.
Corporal Smith was a sweet man whose affable character endeared him to us all.
He was personally known to me for a number of years. We talked a lot about community policing and he taught me a lot. His positive and enthusiastic attitude motivated so many to do better. I shall miss him greatly.
I am deeply distressed by this terrible killing. We all need to be reminded of the bravery of our police officers as they put their lives on the line for our protection.
My deepest sympathies go to his wife and family, his friends and colleges.
May his soul rest in peace.
