Letter of the Day | Get the guns, solve the problem
THE EDITOR, Sir:
We could talk until our throats get sore about Jamaica's crime problem. We could put measures and strategies in place until there is no place to put anymore, to fix this problem. We could come up with the wisest plans to defeat this terrible monster - we still won't get anywhere.
The reason for this is that we are not getting to the root of the matter. All we have been doing is covering it up. Until those who are behind the gun trade - who have foreign links - and are bringing illegal guns and ammunition into the island, change their ways, we will get nowhere. Unless the powers that be, who know who are the gun runners, find and hold them accountable and then mash them down to nothing, we will never bring down this high crime rate with which we are faced.
Are you telling me that, for more than 20 years, since we have been hearing about the gun trade and illegal guns coming into the country, the powers that be have not learnt who are the culprits behind it? They do not even have a clue? After 20 years, none of them can tell who are the culprits who are handing out illegal guns to criminals?
The gun is one of the most dangerous weapons available to criminals. Most of the murders in Jamaica are being carried out with the gun. So unless we get the guns, we will still be helpless and hopeless when it comes to crime.
