Tackle crime surgically

Published:Wednesday | January 10, 2018 | 12:00 AM

THE EDITOR, Sir:

While I know that the answer to this overwhelming crime problem is a moral one, it has to be dealt with separately. So, governmentally speaking, a simple solution is to hold officers accountable.

Also, there has to be a real economic opportunity for more people to join the force. Because the crime rate has got so bad in certain areas, there MUST be more police stations placed strategically in certain towns and neighbourhoods.

DEPUTISE CIVILIANS

We should also create a deputising programme for civilians without uniform that will help to alert any potential or ongoing plans for crime. If these points are implemented, they will help greatly. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to see this. We must make an example of criminals so people will think twice before breaching the law.

So unfortunate that Jamaica has come to this. When I was growing up in Hanover many moons ago, we could walk and play as children. Not so anymore. I want to return home to live, but I am very hesitant.
