Probation for minnows only?
THE EDITOR, Sir:
I am completely taken aback by the outcry from different quarters on the acting appointment of our chief justice.
Justice Bryan Sykes has been named to act in the position. He is unquestionably a learned and erudite jurist. The practice within the public and private sectors is for a probationary period before appointments.
What is wrong? His administrative and leadership skills will be tested in the interim. On the other hand, there is a recently named acting appointment for the chief medical officer, Dr Jacqueline Bisasor-McKenzie.
Jamaica, get real. There is no doubt that Justice Sykes will hold his seat. Let this be the beginning of a process where persons are made to prove their mettle before full appointment at all levels.
This country is indeed riddled with indiscipline, runaway murder rates, untold violence and disregard for the environment. Put your energies into finding feasible, workable solutions.
