Time to suspend pageantry
THE EDITOR, Sir:
I wonder why we still persist with this ceremonial opening of Parliament nonsense. What purpose does it serve, really? Why not just get on with the business of attending to the nation's affairs?
In my opinion, with the kind of crime we are experiencing here, all these ceremonial empty gestures should be suspended in the interest of emphasising the seriousness with which the crime beast is being tackled. The fact that this persists shows me that we are still asleep.
It cannot all be business as usual. People are being killed at a rate in this country that suggests we are at war with ourselves. Why then should we parade about when opening our Parliament?
How will that help us? It might seem silly, but I believe we should throw this out the window at least until we feel like we have got crime under control.
