Take back Jamaica from criminals
THE EDITOR, Sir:
Jamaica's crime rate has spiralled out of control. At one time in our history, upper- and middle-income society would only single out downtown Kingston as being unsafe. Now, everywhere is suddenly susceptible to violence.
Ordinary youngsters who once found shopping and walking about busy central areas are now fearful, as even in thick crowds one can easily be robbed, abducted or even lose one's life. When one can be held up and robbed at gunpoint in Half-Way Tree Square, it just shows how horrible crime has become.
Who will protect us? Are we to stay home in fear and abstain from participating in social gatherings, or going to work, school and church?
Will we slowly become one of those nations where freedom will be a thing of the past?
I am calling for our security forces and our own security minister to intervene and to find practical ways of tackling crime while we still have a fighting chance.
