Dust annoying Hagley Park residents
THE EDITOR, Sir:
Oftentimes agents of the State forget to abide by best practices, leaving citizens inconvenienced. In recent weeks, the National Works Agency (NWA) has been conducting drainage-improvement work on Clunies Avenue, which is located off Hagley Park.
As a result of the ongoing work by the NWA, an unusual amount of dust and dirty has accumulated in the work area, and this is quite understandable. However, what is unacceptable is the fact that little attempt has been made to cushion the effect of this nuisance. The result is, residents of the area have had to live with this annoyance for the past few weeks. Additionally, more traffic is now using McArthur Avenue as the Hagley Park Road improvement project continues.
Is it too much to ask the NWA to ensure that a water truck sprinkles the affected roads at regular intervals in order to mitigate against this inconvenience?
While we recognise the need for this critical work, we must also be mindful of the needs of the residents, especially in light of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal #11, which addresses the need to make cities inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable. Let us find a balance as we move forward.
