Sagicor slashes insurance benefits

Published:Tuesday | September 18, 2018 | 12:00 AM

Last Wednesday, I was presented with an upgraded offer from Sagicor Life Jamaica in relation to the health insurance coverage subsidised by the Government of Jamaica for workers employed in the public service.

The new offer has some enticing benefits: increased amount in life insurance in the event of death, increased amount for critical illness, among others. These increased offers are indeed laudable and welcoming.

What was surprising, however, is the exclusion of dental and optical services in the updated offer! This I deem to be a great disappointment.

As an educator, my teeth and eyes are crucial to me performing at my optimum potential. As a result, I seize the opportunity to utilise my health card to have my teeth cleaned at least once per year, as I must smile with confidence in front of my students.

Removing this subsidised offer from our health cards will be a great blow not just to me, but also my colleagues, and will serve for the deterioration of our oral health, as many of us will not be able to afford the full cost to clean our teeth and maintain our eyesight.

I urged Sagicor to revert to the previous plan. We deserve better.
